FORGET THE REINDEER. FEAR THE GREY MARE.

Y Fari Lwyd, the Grey Mare, is a Welsh midwinter custom. A horse's skull is fixed on a pole, draped in a white sheet and trimmed with ribbons, then carried from door to door in the dark weeks around Christmas and the New Year.

At each house the Mari's party sings for entry, and the people inside must answer verse for verse in a battle of rhymes called pwnco. Lose, and the Grey Mare comes in for food, drink and mischief.

This is the Mari Lwyd Christmas jumper from the Forget The Pumpkin Christmas range by Wispling Press: winter folklore monsters in a bold woodcut style, for anyone who'd rather a darker Christmas.
